How to know whether you need a new job or a new direction.
It is not always the job. Sometimes it is the role, the environment or your priorities. Here is how to tell the difference.

Two people can say exactly the same sentence, "I need to get out of here", and need completely different things. One needs a better version of the job they already have. The other needs a different kind of work.
Signs you need a new job
- The work itself still interests you when the noise dies down.
- You can describe a version of this role you would happily do for years.
- Most of your frustration points at the organisation, the manager or the workload.
Signs you need a new direction
- You have already changed employers and the feeling followed you.
- The parts of the job you enjoy are the small, unofficial parts.
- You cannot picture the natural next step without a quiet sinking feeling.
If the feeling followed you to a new employer, it was never really about the employer.
If you are in the first group, a focused search is enough. If you are in the second, spend a little time on direction first. It is much cheaper than a change you undo in a year.
